What makes points transferable?
A transferable currency belongs to a bank or rewards program rather than to one airline. Depending on the program and your eligible card, you may be able to transfer those points to several loyalty programs.
This is different from earning airline miles directly. Airline miles generally stay inside that airline’s loyalty program. Transferable points remain flexible until you choose a partner and complete a transfer.
Why flexibility matters
No airline program is best for every trip. One may have a useful route but no available award seats; another may offer the same flight through an airline partnership. Keeping points transferable lets you compare options before committing.
Transfer partners and ratios vary by program. Some partners overlap across multiple credit card currencies, while others are available from only one or two.
Two common ways to use the points
Book through the card program
You may be able to redeem points through the issuer’s travel service. This can be straightforward, and the booking may behave more like a paid ticket, but the value per point depends on your card and program.
Transfer to a loyalty partner
You can move points to an airline or hotel program and redeem under that program’s rules. This can unlock valuable awards, but it adds complexity and transfers are generally final.
A simple example
Suppose an award costs 30,000 airline miles and the normal transfer ratio is 1:1. You would usually need 30,000 transferable points. With a 20% transfer bonus, 25,000 points would produce 30,000 miles. Taxes, fees, award availability, and the program’s rules still determine whether the booking is worthwhile.
What to check before earning or transferring
- Whether your specific card allows transfers and which partners it supports
- The current transfer ratio and any minimum or increment requirements
- Whether the award you want is actually available
- The cash price, points price, taxes, and fees
- Cancellation rules and the loyalty program’s expiration policy
