Before you begin
You generally need an eligible rewards account and an account with the airline or hotel partner. The names and personal details on both accounts may need to match. Some programs limit transfers to the primary cardholder or authorized users who meet specific requirements.
A safer transfer sequence
- Choose the exact trip. Identify the flight or stay, dates, and travelers.
- Find bookable award space. Search while signed in to the loyalty program that will issue the award.
- Calculate the full cost. Include all miles, taxes, fees, and every traveler.
- Check the transfer terms. Confirm the ratio, minimum, increments, estimated timing, and promotion end date.
- Verify both accounts. Check the loyalty number and account-holder details before submitting.
- Transfer only what you need. Allow for required increments, but avoid a speculative surplus.
- Book promptly. Award space can disappear while a transfer is processing.
Understanding transfer ratios
A 1:1 ratio means 1,000 transferable points become 1,000 partner points or miles. Other ratios may produce more or fewer partner points. Always calculate the final amount rather than assuming every partnership is 1:1.
How transfer bonuses change the math
A transfer bonus increases the number of partner points you receive. With a 20% bonus, transferring 10,000 eligible points produces 12,000 partner points. To determine the transferable points needed for an award, divide the award cost by 1 plus the bonus rate, then round up according to the program’s transfer increments.
A simple example
An award costs 48,000 miles and a 20% bonus applies. Dividing 48,000 by 1.20 gives 40,000, so 40,000 transferable points would produce the needed 48,000 miles if the promotion and account are eligible.
Timing and failed transfers
Some transfers complete quickly; others can take longer. Published timing is an estimate, not a guarantee. A delay creates a risk that award space or pricing will change before the miles arrive.
If a transfer does not appear, do not immediately submit it again. Save the confirmation, check both account histories, and contact the rewards program that initiated the transfer.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Transferring because a large bonus looks attractive without a specific use
- Assuming an award seen in one program is available through another
- Forgetting taxes, fees, transfer minimums, or rounding increments
- Sending points to the wrong loyalty account
- Waiting until the final minutes of a promotion
